Design Systems That Actually Scale With the Team

The design system tropes that sound smart but slow teams down — and the boring practices that let a small system serve a big org.

Design Systems That Actually Scale With the Team

Every startup wants a design system. Very few need one on day one, and even fewer build one that scales.

Start with tokens, not components

Colors, spacing, radius, motion. These are the primitives everything else depends on. Get them right and your components will practically design themselves.

Prefer patterns over parts

A "Button" component is easy. A "PrimaryAction" pattern — with content guidelines, accessibility rules, and analytics — is what actually keeps a team aligned.

Version deliberately

Design systems that never break anything are systems no one uses. Ship breaking changes with clear migration guides and dead simple codemods.

Boring, documented, versioned. That's how a small system serves a big org.
